EX-COWBOY HELD ON DRUG CHARGE
Nate Newton Jailed In Louisiana After Routine Traffic Stop
Former Cowboys lineman Nate Newton was arrested over the weekend in
Louisiana when state police found more than 200 pounds of marijuana in the
van he was driving.
Newton, who played 13 seasons for the Cowboys and helped the team win three
Super Bowls, was arrested Sunday and taken to the St. Martin Parish Jail in
St. Martinville, La. Bail was set at $200,000, but it was unclear whether
he was still in jail Tuesday night, said Louisiana state trooper Willie
Williams.
Three other people were arrested with Newton, Williams said. They were
identified as Faye Cleveland, 46, and Marva Johnson Waye, 49, both of
Jacksonville, Fla., and Ricky Glenn Williams, 46, of Quinlan.
Newton and the two women were stopped for a routine traffic violation when
officers found 213 pounds of marijuana. They were charged with possession
of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Ricky Glenn Williams was following the van in a pickup registered to
Newton. Police found $18,000 in the pickup and the man was charged with
conspiracy to possess narcotics, Willie Williams said.
Newton was scheduled to be a guest analyst Sunday on the Cowboys radio
broadcast with announcers Brad Sham and Babe Laufenberg. The game against
the Falcons is in Atlanta, and Newton lives in East Ellijay, Ga.
Sham would not speculate on Newton's status for the game, saying he wanted
to wait until he talked to him first.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, admittedly startled at the news, declined to comment.
