DECRIMINALIZATING MARIJUANA DRAWS DIVERSE OPINIONS

Decriminalizing the possession of "minute" amounts of marijuana was
discussed during a meeting of police commissioners Tuesday.

Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Edgar MacLeod said the Canadian
Association of Chiefs is looking at making the possession of small amounts
of pot for personal use a summary offence, but they don't want it legalized.

The suggestion is based on the amount of police work involved in the effort
to prosecute individuals generally awarded a conditional sentence or
absolute discharge in federal court.

Jim MacLeod, a police commissioner, was concerned about any changes in drug
legislation.

"Where do these people get their money? Break and enters, assaults, this is
where it's coming from."

He said the drug trade is costing the Cape Breton Regional Municipality,
the province and the nation and local police haven't touched the "tip of
the iceberg" yet.
