BUSTED IN THE BOY'S ROOM

Allegations that a Greensburg Salem Senior High School student dealt
marijuana from a school bathroom conjure a disturbing image of drug
trafficking on school grounds, and during school hours.

According to police, an organized procedure was in place: A drug
buyer would place an order in the morning, it would be paid for later
in the day, and the drugs would be delivered at a designated location
at school. It's not clear for how long this alleged caper went on.

Fortunately, the lines of communication between students and faculty
at the senior high school seem to be open. Students tipped off school
personnel of the alleged goings-on, and officials investigated. The
student now charged with dealing was confronted in the boy's
lavatory; he denied any knowledge or possession of the drugs
allegedly found in his book bag.

Sadly, drug dealing at schools is an old story. In this case,
however, some students had the presence of mind to report what they
witnessed. That indicates an environment where students and staff
share more than classrooms.

The case against the now-suspended student is still pending, and
innocence is presumed until guilt is proven. But there's sufficient
evidence to warrant a review of existing school policies and
procedures. The fact remains that drugs, apparently packaged to be
sold, were found on school grounds.

Is this an isolated incident, or part of something more far-reaching
and insidious? School officials need to find out; we trust they will.
