RTI AGAIN POSTS RECORD YEAR
DURHAM -- Research Triangle Institute continued its drive in 2001 to be a
major player in the research world, with the independent organization
reporting its third consecutive year of record revenues.
The independent research organization reported revenue of $265 million in
fiscal year 2001, up 10.9 percent from 2000's revenues of $239.1 million.
But the company's net income decreased to $8.2 million for the year ended
Sept. 30, from $8.5 million last year, which was a record profit.
RTI, which also saw its work force grow to 1,952 from 1,826 a year ago,
reported that it attained several milestones over the year, including:
- -- A three-year, $716,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to seek
anti-cancer pharmaceuticals from 10,000 species of mushrooms.
- -- An advance in semiconductor technology with development of a
thermoelectric material that's more than two times more efficient and
23,000 times faster than existing materials.
- -- A compound discovered by RTI that's been chosen by Addiction Therapies
Inc., of Massachusetts for clinical trials as the world's first
pharmaceutical to treat cocaine addiction.
RTI is an independent, nonprofit research organization that studies the
fields of health and medicine, environmental protection, technology
commercialization, decision support systems and education and training.
