GOVT ACCEPTS 44 DRUG SUMMIT RECOMMENDATIONS

The Western Australian Government says it has accepted all but one of the
45 recommendations of the state's community drug summit.

The Government has already been criticised for rejecting the recommendation
to consider safe injecting rooms for drug users.

Premier Geoff Gallop says the Government's priority is to consider and
pursue strategies that save lives and stream people into appropriate treatment.

Dr Gallop says the Government spends $51 million a year on drug and alcohol
related services and programs, and plans to inject a further $5 million
over the next 18 months.

He says a ministerial working party will be formed to present a cannabis
law reform package to Cabinet by March 2002.
