DEPUTY ARRESTED FOR DRUG DELIVERY

A Cleveland County Detention Center Deputy was arrested Friday on
complaints of delivering drugs to county inmates. John Nathan Smith, 23,
was arrested after other deputies watched him make a trip to his car and
then return with packages for inmates.

Undersheriff Roy Bugher said Smith was fired immediately following the arrest.

The investigation, Bugher said, led deputies to believe Smith received
payments of $20 per delivery from family members of inmates.

Smith made deliveries to six different inmates on Thursday night, Bugher
said. The packages contained primarily marijuana, tobacco and syringes.

Bugher said deputies believe Smith had been making deliveries for the past
three months.

Smith had only been employed at the jail for six months.

Because of his employment with Cleveland County, Smith was taken to McClain
County jail for booking. He was released Friday afternoon after posting a
$20,000 bond.
