MOTHER CHARGED AFTER CHILD TESTS POSITIVE FOR 'METH'
A local woman has been charged with a criminal offense after her infant
child tested positive for methamphetamine.
And a local couple believed to have been marijuana dealers has been charged
after 25 to 30 pounds of the illegal weed was found at their home. Those
are two of the stories to come from the processing of sealed indictments
returned last week by the DeKalb County Grand Jury.
Felicia Murphy, 21, of Meadowbrook Drive, was indicted on a charge of
reckless endangerment with a weapon--a drug.
Sheriff Kenneth Pack and Detective Jon Odom said Murphy is charged with
smoking methamphetamine while with child. After the child was born, it
tested positive for methamphetamine.
Odom said before being discharged from the local hospital after having her
baby, Murphy left the facility for a short time and upon her return she
acted in a strange manner as if under an intoxicant.
Murphy was tested for drug use and after it was determine methamphetamine
was in her system, the infant was also tested. That test also came back
positive.
Odom was notified and began an investigation into the case that led to the
sealed indictment.
Odom said Monday the child "is doing okay" and is in the custody of a
grandmother.
In a separate case, the woman's boyfriend, Jamie Carroll, 22 of Gentry
Avenue, has been indicted on a charge of attempting to manufacture a
Schedule II drug (methamphetamine)
Chief Deputy Patrick Ray said the charge was the result of an investigation
in September in which components used to manufacture the drug were found at
a residence on Adcock Cemetery Road.
A local couple that allegedly had been traveling to Texas to pick up
marijuana were charged in sealed indictments last week.
Jimmie Lee Marr, 36, and Gladys Frances Marr, 36, of A.B. Frazier Road,
have been indicted on charges of possession of a Schedule VI drug
(marijuana) for resale and/or delivery and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Deputy Ray said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) agents were
conducting another investigation when the learned about the Marrs and
contacted the sheriff's office.
Officers went to the Marr's home and found 25 to 30 pounds of marijuana and
a large amount of cash.
He said the couple were apparently bringing the drug in from out of state
and distributing it elsewhere.
In another case, a Baxter man was charged here following a methamphetamine
lab investigation.
Brad Eugene Julian, 25, was indicted on charges of manufacturing a
Scheduled II controlled substance, possession of a Scheduled II drug,
possession of a Scheduled VI drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Julian was apparently staying at a local motel that was under surveillance
by local authorities. When Julian was originally arrested and taken into
custody on warrants from Warren County, officers found components used in
the production of methamphetamine in his vehicle. In addition, a white,
powdery substance, believed to be methamphetamine, and what was believed to
be marijuana, were found in his car.
Officers received consent to search Julian's hotel room and found an active
methamphetamine lab. Inside his boat, which was parked outside, was several
hypodermic needles and another small bag of what was believed to be
methamphetamine.
The names and charges of others charged in sealed indictments include:
* William Andrew Cantrell, 32, simple possession and possession of drug
paraphernalia;
* James Roger Effler, 32, six counts of forgery and six counts of passing a
forged instrument;
* Michael Leo Adcock, 40, and Larry Mason Adcock, 51, of Obie Adcock Road,
possession of explosives and possession of prohibited weapons.
