DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: ARRESTS IN KILLING
The police arrested five men who mortally wounded a senator from the
governing party last week in what now appears to have been a botched
robbery attempt. Sen. Dario Gomez of the Revolutionary Democratic Party was
shot after he arrived at a friend's home, and there was speculation that he
had been the target of drug dealers because he was co-author of a bill that
mandated stiffer penalties for money laundering. But the men who were
arrested said they had shot Mr. Gomez only to disable him during a robbery,
the police said.
