THERE MUST BE 53 WAYS TO GET YOUR NEWS

from the Media Awareness Project

WEEKLY:

The DrugSense Weekly, the originial drug policy weekly on the 'net, has the largest email and web following of any single item we provide. Distributed late Fridays, you can always check the current issue at

http://www.drugsense.org/current.htm

or sign up to receive it by email in text or HTML web page format at

http://www.drugsense.org/news.htm

BY EMAIL:

Our most popular email service is called the DrugNews Digest (DND). Each
digest contains an average of about ten news items - but only the first
paragraph or two of the item along with a link to the entire article. Here is
an example (spaces not in the DND's have been added so that this example,
as archived, will appear as close to correct as possible):

MARIJUANA LAW HERE TO STAY

I am a nonuser who spoke at the recent fact-gathering hearing in Eugene on
Oregon's medical marijuana program. My wife has a pending application for
an Oregon medical marijuana card. She has a long and strongly documented
medical history of wrenching pain and physical deterioration. I would like
to point out some important details not covered in The Register-Guard's
Dec. 7 story.

1) These newly implemented "rules" by state health authorities have delayed
over $135,000 in uncollected state fees that may never be recovered. The
new rules themselves have cost taxpayers over $57,000 in meetings with
federal officials and attorneys, paperwork and salary demands by state
health officials.

2) It was revealed that almost every primary care physician may treat up to
1,000 patients each within a six-month period and may prescribe any kind of
drug accordingly.

[continues: 22 lines]
------------------------------

Each of the items in a DND end with the 'continues:' line (unless the whole very short item appears) to provide you with how much more is at the URL at the top of the item.

About five DND's are emailed out each day. To sign up to receive the DND by
email go to

http://www.mapinc.org/lists/index.htm#form

and supply your email address in the form. You will receive an email asking
you to confirm that you are asking to sign up (thus nobody else can sign
you up - this applies to all the news clipping email lists).

WANT TO RECEIVE THE NEWS CLIPPINGS FASTER?

Our news clippings are archived in the website archives (see below) each
time a DND is created. But those who may wish to obtain the news faster can
sign up to receive the Whole News Items as individual emails just as fast
as the editors at MAP post them. Those who sign up to receive the
individual items can expect - on the average - to receive items a little
over two hours faster than those who receive them via the DND.

Additionally, folks who receive the individual items can use the filters in
their email programs to filter news items based on filter criteria they
create into various email boxes. For example, one activist filters the
individual news items from initiative states into mailboxes for those
states. There are many creative ways to filter on various keywords to allow
you to focus on the news of most interest to you when you receive your news
clippings as individual items.

MAPNews is what we call the email list that sends out the individual items.
MAPNews is a very busy - average 50 clippings per day and on busy news days
has reached as many as 100 per day!

To sign up for MAPNews you use the drop down here:

http://www.mapinc.org/lists/index.htm#form

Sound like way too much email? Well, we have created several subsets of
MAPNews so that you can sign up to receive only the news clippings as
individual items from that subset. The subsets and average number per day
of items are:

Region - List Name - Volume

Australia australia 2 to 4 per day

Canada cnnews 10 to 15 per day

Latin America latinews 3 to 5 per day

New Zealand nznews 2 to 3 per day

United Kingdom uknews 3 to 5 per day

United States usnews 25 to 40 per day

Topic - List Name - Volume

Marijuana News mjnews 10 to 16 per day

The topic specialized Marijuana News is our latest email creation. Not
every clipping with a cannabis or hemp related keyword is sent. The list
sends out only those items in which the headline writer (and thus the
subject of the message) thought that cannabis was key enough to the item to
include a cannabis word it the title. Again, any of these specialized email
news feeds may be signed up for by using the drop down at:

http://www.mapinc.org/lists/index.htm#form

Note that you can also sign off the email lists by using the same form! But
be sure to use exactly the same email address you signed on with to sign
off - or it will not work.

Finally, you can send an email at any time to top100@mapinc.org - nothing
needed in the subject line or body of the email - and quickly receive back
a list of the current list of the 100 most popular articles in the MAP
archives in this format:

1) After Action Reports: Challenge The DEA, 4 Dec 2001
http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v01/n000/a225.html?999

2) US: Web: America's Lonely Drug War
http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v01/n2081/a06.html?999

3) New Zealand: End The Reefer Madness, Get Real - US Drug Experts
http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v01/n2093/a08.html?999

SURF ON IN!

By far the largest share of folks receive their news clippings by surfing
on in to our website either at www.mapinc.org or at www.mapinc.org/drugnews

But if you wish to create some bookmarks for your web browser, you can use
them to surf on in to specific subsets of news:

By Area - you can create a bookmark for any country - plus any state for
the U.S. or province for Canada - as shown by these examples:

http://www.mapinc.org/area/New+Mexico

http://www.mapinc.org/area/British+Columbia

http://www.mapinc.org/area/Colombia

By Source publication - as shown in these examples:

http://www.mapinc.org/source/Economist

http://www.mapinc.org/source/New+York+Times

By Author - examples:

http://www.mapinc.org/author/Ellen+Goodman

http://www.mapinc.org/author/Mike+Gray

By published letter to the editor writers:

http://www.mapinc.org/writers/Robert+Sharpe

And even by the names of people, which searches the archives for their names:

http://www.mapinc.org/people/Kevin+Zeese

Oh, you can be tricky, and use the 'people' one to create a bookmark to
look for something else, for example:

http://www.mapinc.org/people/medical+marijuana

Results, of course, may not always be as complete as you would like. But
testing different combinations may result in workable bookmarks for you.

Just as there are many links - really just bookmarks - from the home page
at www.mapinc.org we (well really, Matt Elrod) have created a good number
for various purposes as listed below:

At the bottom of the page for each bookmark you will see our Power Search
http://www.mapinc.org/find Learning to use Power Search will allow you to
find drug and drug policy related news clippings on almost any topic.

You can receive fresh, complete (the above does not include the entire
list) list of these links by sending an email to
topics@mapinc.org Nothing is required in the subject or body of the
email. You will receive the list back fairly quickly!

WHY WE DO IT

The purpose since day one for the MAP news clipping service has been - and
remains - to allow you, our readers, to discuss the clippings - not on some
website - But In The Very Pages Of The Publication That Printed The Item!
That is why the clippings have a one click contact line that sets you up to
send a Letter to the Editor of the publication.

And so many of you do send those Letters to the Editor in, as shown by the
almost eight thousand we know have been published so far (plus a thousand
or so we may well have missed). See: http://www.mapinc.org/lte/

Additionally, when the website of the publication has an on-line discussion
forum, we provide that link, which can be seen by clicking on the Details:
line if it exists for the publication. We know that many of you also
discuss the news items in these forums.

THANK YOU!

Thanks to all of you, readers, newshawks, editors at MAP, Letter to the
Editor writers, and those who donate to keep our effort going. Thank You
Everyone!

Finally, we would be remiss if we didn't let you know about our popular
sister news clipping site http://www.cannabisnews.com/ of which we are also
very proud!
