PAIN FREE
To the editor:
Finally, someone writes in defense of the painkilling drug Oxycontin (Jacob
Sullum column, Dec. 19). I've been very concerned that all this publicity
would prompt some idiot in Congress to attempt to outlaw use of the drug.
There are no doubt thousands of us who find blessed relief, while being
absolutely able to function normally, because of Oxycontin. The argument
that it is abused is no doubt true. But so are alcohol, aspirin and dozens
of other products -- including cars. Do we do away with them as well because
of abuse?
All this bad publicity has indeed made doctors nervous about giving it out
- -- who wants to get in trouble? And that's a shame. For those of you who are
blessed without constant pain, be grateful, and know there is something out
there which can save your mental and physical health should this tragedy
befall you.
I write this in the hope that people in power will stop and reconsider
before doing away with something so helpful. To those of you who abuse it --
thanks a lot, if you know what I mean.
