SNIFFER DOG SNAGS SCHOOLBOYS AFTER DRUGS TALK

LONDON (Reuters) - A trained dog gave British police an unexpected
visual aid for their speech to schoolchildren about the dangers of
drugs -- the animal picked out four of the students and police found
cannabis stored in their lockers.

"It's one assembly that no one will ever forget," said Alan Mobbs of
the Devon and Cornwall Police.

Three of the four boys, aged 15 and 16, were let off with reprimands
but one was prosecuted and later received a conditional discharge.

"It's not necessarily a negative thing. We've got our message across
that cannabis is still illegal," Mobbs said.

The officers' short-haired German pointer is trained to sit down next
to anyone who smells of drugs. "It's certainly shown the value of the
dog," Mobbs said.

Schoolboy drug use has been in the news in Britain this week. Police
said on Monday that Prince Harry, the second son of heir to the
throne Prince Charles, could face police action after revelations
that he had smoked cannabis.
