POT GROWER ALSO WANTED BY POLICE IN WESTERN CANADA

A man living in New Waterford, who was arrested this week after police
raided a marijuana growing operation, is also wanted by police in Alberta.

Bryan John Card, 37, of Mahon Street, recently moved to Cape Breton from
western Canada and arrest warrants issued in Alberta cite charges of
trafficking and driving without a licence. Card is alleged to have failed
to show for court appearances.

Meanwhile, Card will remain behind bars in Cape Breton after a brief
provincial court appearance Thursday in Sydney.

He is charged with a single count of growing marijuana and is scheduled to
return to court Feb. 5 to enter a plea and a possible bail hearing.

The Crown is opposing his release given the outstanding warrants from
another province. He is considered a flight risk.

Cape Breton Regional Police raided Card's rented New Waterford home shortly
after 7 a.m. Wednesday and left with some $400,000 worth of pot and a wide
variety of growing equipment and supplies.

Police sized 354 marijuana plants in various stages of maturity, the
majority of which were found in the basement.

The raid was the result of a month-long investigation launched by the
street crime unit after receiving information from an anonymous source.

While the man's 17-year-old son was also taken into custody he has since
been released and is not facing any criminal charges.
