EXTRADITION OF DRUG SUSPECTS DELAYED

Mexico can't turn over a former Mexican governor and two other alleged drug
traffickers to the United States until their cases have been decided at
home, prosecutors said Friday.

A federal court in New York has asked Mexico to extradite Mario Villanueva,
who served as governor of Quintana Roo state until 1999 and allegedly
protected the Juarez drug smuggling cartel.

Villanueva was captured in the seaside resort of Cancun in May after two
years on the run. He has denied protecting one of Mexico's most powerful
drug cartels.

The United States is also seeking the extradition of suspected Juarez drug
bosses Alcides Ramon Magana and Gilberto Salinas Doria, a U.S. citizen and
former Texas police officer.
