STRATHCONA CHOSEN FOR NAT'L DRUG USE PILOT
Strathcona County is one of nine communities in Canada that will take part
in a project that will explore drug use, as well as the misuse of alcohol
and prescription medications.
The six-month program is an initiative of the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities, of which Strathcona is a member.
The federation is a national association dedicated to improving the quality
of life in all Canadian communities by promoting strong, effective and
accountable government.
Richmond, Courtenay, and Prince Rupert, B.C., Regina, Thompson, Man., Ville
de Hawkesbury, Ont., Salisbury, N.B., and Mount Pearl, Nfld., are the other
municipalities participating in the project.
Locally, Strathcona's Family and Community Services will coordinate the
project with a steering committee representing various community agencies.
The program will seek public input through community forums.
The intention is to develop an approach to the health of the community by
addressing social issues that can lead to drug use, such as poverty, living
conditions, employment, family situations and peer pressure.
