DEA AGENT CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER SHOOTING

ROANOKE, Va. -- A special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration was
charged with murder Tuesday in the fatal shooting of a man in a restaurant
parking lot, police said.

Timothy G. Workman, 31, from McAllen, Texas, was in Roanoke investigating
an international drug distribution organization that had ties to the area,
the DEA said.

Roanoke Police said Workman shot Keith Edward Bailey, 41, during a scuffle
after both left O'Charley's restaurant early in the morning. Bailey was
shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.

Workman also was charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

DEA officials said in a statement they don't know whether Bailey was
connected to Workman's investigation. Internal affairs agents have been
dispatched to Roanoke to look into the matter.

"Whenever a life is taken by any DEA special agent, a thorough review is
undertaken at the highest levels of the Department of Justice," said R.C.
Gamble, special agent in charge of the DEA Washington Division.

Workman also was suspended with pay.
