AC PROBATION DEPT. OFFERS DRUG, ALCOHOL CLASSES IN AREA
Anderson County Probation Director Alan Beauchamp has announced that the
probation department is now offering alcohol and drug education classes to
inmates at the Anderson County jail, to probationers and to the community.
This six-hour intensive class over a three-week period is helping
individuals with drug and alcohol problems establish a starting point in
realizing the effects of drug and alcohol abuse, a press release from
Beauchamp states.
"This is an opportunity for these men and women to turn their lives
around," Beauchamp states in the release. "The program helps them focus on
their problems and the impact of drug and alcohol abuse.
"We worked for months to find a program that we felt would help our
probationers have a chance to get real help. These classes are intensive
and allow each person to recognize how chemical dependency operates and how
they can get help.
"We are also working with individuals who request further help upon
completion of the program to get into long-term counseling and group
programs," he states.
"We started this program in December at the jail, offering it to female
inmates. The program can accommodate up to 12 persons in a group.
"We have over 30 individuals who are enrolled in the program currently or
have completed the program in December or January," he states.
Roger Hackett of Westside Psychology in Knoxville teaches the program.
"Roger is formerly with Cornerstone Recovery and has years of experience
teaching drug-free-workplace classes and alcohol and drug education
classes," Beauchamp added.
Classes are open to anyone seeking help with alcohol or drug problems.
Classes are held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the first three Thursdays of each
month in Room 118 at the Anderson County Courthouse.
Advance registration is required. The cost is $49 for the three-week
course. The course is offered free to inmates at the jail.
For more information about the classes, call Maura Peters, Anderson County
Probation Services programs director, at 463-6829.
