FIVE FEDERAL AGENTS, TWO STATE POLICE CHARGED WITH DRUG SMUGGLING IN MEXICO

Eleven members of the drug smuggling gang known as the Gulf cartel have
been charged with organized crime, drug trafficking and possession of
illegal weapons, the Mexican attorney general's office said.

Five federal agents and two state police officers are among those facing
charges, the attorney general's office said in a statement released Monday.

Also facing charges are two assistants of the state police officers, a
pilot and a gunsmith.

All were arrested in December in the border town of Reynosa for working for
one of Mexico's most-wanted drug lords, Osiel Cardenas. One of the main
leaders of the group, Hugo Baldomero Medina Garza, was also arrested last year.
