ON DOPE ROW

Statistics And Response

The charts to the right represent the findings of Insight's state- prison
survey. To view one, simply click on the icon above the corresponding
description.

Whenever an overdose is mentioned, it refers to one that resulted in the
death of an inmate. All population, urinalysis and unexplained death data
is from the CJI Yearbook. To view the methodology of this study, see the
sidebar in part 2 of On Dope Row.

Chart 1: This is a list of how many fatal overdoses (total and per year)
occurred in each state.

Chart 2: This shows how many unexplained deaths occurred in each prison.
Unexplained deaths are categorized as overdoses by federal prisons, but not
by private or state facilities.

Chart 3: This contains several top 10 lists and other findings such as
which states did not have the information Insight requested and which
claimed to have no fatal overdoses in the last decade. (There is a mistake
in the top 10 list of total fatal overdoses. Maryland and Missouri both had
only 12 between 1990-2000).
