POLICE OFFICER ADMITS HE LIED UNDER OATH

CHICAGO -- A Chicago police officer pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor
civil-rights violation and admitted he lied under oath while testifying in
Cook County Circuit Court in 1996.

As part of a plea agreement, Robert Gloeckler, 38, agreed to resign from
the force within a week and surrender his firearms, according to Assistant
U.S. Atty. David Hoffman.

Gloeckler, a Foster Avenue District officer, admitted he lied at a probable
cause hearing when he said he and another officer had arrested someone in a
car on North Broadway and had found a gun under the driver's seat. But the
arrest occurred 2 1/2 miles away, outside the Foster Avenue police station,
and no weapon was recovered, Hoffman said.

Xavier Castro, 52, and Matthew Craig, 39, also have been charged and have
pleaded not guilty. The three officers were originally charged with
entering the homes of suspected drug dealers without warrants and lying
under oath about where the arrests took place to conceal illegal searches.
