DRUG TASK FORCE TO HOLD AUCTION AND SELL CARS, OTHER SEIZED ITEMS
NEWPORT -- The First and Third Judicial District Drug Task Force's annual
auction of confiscated goods will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the old
Federal Compress building on Arkansas 69, coordinator Marvin Poe said.
"We'll have items collected from drug seizures from 10 counties," he said.
"We've got more automobiles this time than in the past, plus plenty of odds
and ends."
Money collected from the auctions goes to the task force and is used to
match state and federal grants, Poe added.
"Basically what happens is we get a grant once a year, and 75 percent of
that grant is provided by the state and federal government," he said. "The
local entities are required to match 25 percent of it.
"This money is used to match that grant," he continued. "It saves the
taxpayers from having to pay it."
The task force was awarded a grant that totaled more than $400,000 to
operate in 2001-2002, Poe explained.
"In 1999 a state law was enacted that required us to report our seizures to
the state," said Poe, who will step down from the coordinator's post Jan.
1, 2003. "Everything that is seized is reported to the drug director's office.
"We're audited annually as to what we sell and what we still have
remaining," he continued. "Everything gets sold or is returned to the
rightful owner."
Newport's Kenneth Grady will serve as auctioneer. He said approximately 40
automobiles were slated for the auction block.
"Some of them have mechanical problems," he said. "We'll have a list on
hand that will describe all the items and any problems we're aware of."
Firearms, computers, all-terrain vehicles, tools, televisions, VCRs,
automobiles and other miscellaneous items up for auction will be displayed
from 2-5 p.m. today at the old Federal Compress building on Arkansas 69.
People who wish to bid on items should bring cash, cashier's checks or bank
letters of credit, Grady said. Those who wish further information may
access the Grady Auctions Web site at www.gradyauctions.com.
