COUNCIL JUNKS DRUG STICKER ORDINANCE

THE Provincial Board of Negros Oriental officially junked the drug sticker
ordinance passed by the Dumaguete City Council two years ago.

The ordinance was authored by former Councilor Dr. Noel De Jesus.

Its approval by the City Council came despite strong objections stating the
measure interfered with the rights of the individual.

PB Member Arturo Umbac said that while the intention of the ordinance was
"noble and good" it should be done in accordance with the law.

"They can come up with another ordinance in order to fight drug addiction
but not necessarily pinpointing homes," Umbac said.

He said the move could send a wrong message to people who are not from
Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.

"Supposing in my house, I don't have the sticker, people might think that I
am a drug addict," he added.
