DRUG TASK FORCE WORKS QUIETLY, BUT HAS MAJOR EFFECT

The Fifth Judicial Drug Task Force, directed by the Blount County
sheriff's and district attorney general's offices was busy in 2001,
but stayed largely out of the limelight, officials said. Last year
the task force served 49 search warrants and arrested 185 people in
drug-related investigations. The agents seized more than $43,000 in
cash. Monies confiscated in drug-related investigations are used to
further Task Force investigations and to fund drug awareness
campaigns such as the D.A.R.E. program taught to all 5th graders in
Blount County Schools.

"We often don't issue press releases after drug busts," says Capt.
Ron Talbott. "The simple reason is that one case inevitably leads to
another. If we work our sources and contacts correctly, they will
lead us through the supply chain to catch the so-called bigger fish."

In August, 22 people were arrested during "Operation Nightlife" after
all were indicted by a Blount County grand jury on various drug
charges, including cocaine and LSD. The operation was the culmination
of numerous investigations by the task force.

Last year the task force confiscated more than 10,000 grams of
marijuana, 224 grams of crack cocaine, 491 grams of cocaine, 20 grams
of hashish, 965 units of morphine and nearly 2,400 units of other
illegal prescription drugs.

In addition, agents pulled more than 300 marijuana plants and seized
39 units of LSD.

"Battling drugs is risky business," said Talbott. "We purposely keep
a low profile for safety's sake."

The Task Force operates out of a non-descript location. There are no
signs on the door; no reason to believe anyone is inside except for a
few cars parked outside.

Task force agents work when drug dealers work and that often means
odd hours of the day and night, Talbott said.

"This job is not easy on family life," says Talbot. "On the other
hand, we believe our work ultimately makes quality of life better in
Blount for families."

"Agents on the drug task force are a very focused group of
investigators," says Sheriff James L. Berrong. "Unlike other law
enforcement professionals, they are rarely if ever recognized for
their achievements in a public forum. Without question, they produce
results for our community.

"We are so appreciative of residents who care enough to call us if
they suspect illegal drug activity is occurring in neighborhoods. Not
everyone leaves a name and call back number, but we appreciate their

There are six certified officers in the task force. One is assigned
to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. The other five agents
are deputized by the FBI to assist with federal investigations. The
designation enables the Task Force to pursue cases in federal courts
where convictions carry stiffer penalties, Talbott said.
