COMMITTEE APPROVES BILL TO LIMIT SENTENCE REVISIONS
The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee voted 7-4 yesterday in favor of
legislation that would limit judges' ability to revise a defendant's sentence.
Current law allows a judge to amend a sentence at any time -- a tool many
judges say they use to keep drug offenders in treatment programs, for
example. The proposed legislation would limit such changes to a one-year
period.
The legislation, a priority of Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, has been
rejected in recent years by the House Judiciary Committee.
