DRUG ABUSE IS DISEASE
Drug abuse throughout our county has resulted in hundreds of lost
lives and shattered dreams.
Drug abuse affects every one of us, no matter our place of residence,
socioeconomic condition, educational background or ethnicity.
Unfortunately, a number of myths have developed in regard to
treatment. One is that it is ineffective; another is that it is
unnecessary. Many observe that a number of those who are treated
relapse into drug abuse. But relapse can occur for any chronic
disease. Heart disease or cancer patients often require successive
bouts of treatment to recover.
It is also a myth that dealing with addiction is only a matter of
personal will and character and if these are present, treatment is
unnecessary. This stems from stereotyping and the stigma associated
with drug abuse.
The truth is that while will and character both play a part in
recovery, they are seldom sufficient alone to allow a lasting recovery
from addiction. Studies also show that 40 percent of those with
addictive disorders also have mental disorders. Individuals who become
drug addicts are not bad people.
Special thanks to the Brevard County Commissioners for placing this
issue in the forefront. Incarceration is not the answer to Brevard's
drug problem.
