MONEY LAUNDERING
New York (Associated Press) -- A former police officer and his wife pleaded
guilty on Thursday to laundering as much as $10 million in Colombian drug
money by smuggling suitcases of cash from New York to Miami by rental car.
Homer Zapata, 38, and Liliana Lopez-Zapata, 33, entered guilty pleas a day
after the prosecution concluded its case at their trial in federal court in
Brooklyn, U.S. Attorney Alan Vinegard said in a statement.
The police officer was stripped of his gun and badge two years ago after a
South Carolina sheriff's deputy discovered $200,000 in the couple's car
during a traffic stop.
