THIS ECSTASY CAN KILL YOU
Cops: New Version Of Drug Deadly
Toronto cops are warning young people about a deadly version of Ecstasy
known as "death" that's beginning to show up at city raves and dance clubs.
"We have come across some of this drug recently," Det. Ian Briggs said. "We
are having all the pills tested because not much is known about them."
Police also say Toronto is among the top five cities in North America for
the use of Ecstasy.
The white or pink pills, sold as Ecstasy, contain PMA
(paramethoxyamphetamine) and are responsible for the deaths of more than 12
people in the U.S., Austria, Denmark and Germany, police said.
They added that PMA contains a chemical that raises the body temperature to
as high as 42C, which fries the users' nervous systems and causes bleeding
of the brain and internal organs.
The drug causes muscle spasms, nausea, erratic eye movements and heightened
visual stimulation.
Police said the pills have a Mitsubishi logo and are unusually thick with a
"double-stacked" look.
Peel Police found 300 PMA pills among a batch of 15,000 Ecstasy pills
seized last year in Mississauga. The pills are sold for up to $40 each.
