SCENE WAS CRUDE, LEWD, DEMEANING TO WOMEN
Editor, The Record:
Re: The Arts Club Theatre Company's Ain't Misbehavin' musical revue
performed at the Clarke Foundation Theatre on March 19.
Last night I watched a very groovin', toe-tappin' group of performers at
the beautiful Clarke Theatre in Mission. I loved the singing and the music.
During the intermission, I did nothing but praise the performance to
everybody I met - so much so that my voice was almost hoarse.
During act two, my concerns arose when a man did a solo. I felt like I was
in a public beer parlour watching the stripper do his daily job. For about
six minutes, he smoked what he called a "reefer" (marijuana cigarette). His
obvious delight as he increasingly became stoned represented the
glorification of pot smoking.
I felt embarrassed for the attractive blond woman sitting at the front of
the audience, when he spread his legs, positioned the joint in front of his
private parts and exclaimed, "Wrap you big fat lips around this!" He
proudly pointed out how big his "reefer" was. The sexual part of the scene
was crude, lewd and demeaning to women.
Also, I have seen first hand, in the life of someone I care about, the
devastating consequences of pot smoking.
Was this type of distaste part of our vision when we dedicated our tax
dollars to build and support a community theatre?
