DRUG REHABILITATION

The March 24 article on Miles Davis' chef turned attorney turned drug
addict did a great community service in chronicling the rise and fall of
yet another talented victim of the illness of chemical dependency
("Lawyer's descent from jazz to jail fueled by drugs"). Alcoholism and drug
addiction are equal opportunity illnesses affecting professionals as well
as more common folk.

Austin supports only about 16 detox beds with long waiting lists for men
and women seeking help with recovery. Currently at Austin Recovery, 145 men
and women are waiting for treatment space to become available. The judges
in the article could all see that treatment was needed for this man. When
will Texans see the obvious benefits for the thousands of others?
