THE LATEST ON POT SMOKING

It's reassuring news that Carleton University researchers have found that
people who smoke moderate amounts of marijuana, even over a number of
years, do not experience IQ decreases. Reassuring, because many Canadians
have and still do smoke the stuff, even without benefit of these newest
research findings.

Psychology Prof. Peter Fried did caution that his research is preliminary
and that more needs to be done. Smoking pot could still affect specific
intelligence functions such as short-term memory and attention span.

Significantly, Fried found that IQ dips slightly among current heavy
smokers and because he offered no explanation for this phenomenon, the
field is wide open to speculation.

Try this: the subjects were so mellowed out when the IQ tests were
administered that they didn't care how they scored -- or even if they scored.
