STUDY FIND ALCOHOL AND MARIJUANA THE MOST-USED DRUGS
A new study of drug use has found that young people are most likely to
abuse marijuana and alcohol.
Of the 15,000 people surveyed, 93 per cent had used alcohol and more than
half had tried marijuana. About 15 per cent had used ecstasy or speed and
only 2 per cent had used heroin.
The Government will spend $1 million funding community drug strategies
tackling drug abuse among young people.
The chairman of the Victorian Drugs Prevention Council, Peter Maher, says
the survey will now be conducted on a quarterly basis.
"What we've got to do as far as prevention is concerned is we've now got to
talk about it," he said.
"What we've got to do is increase the amount of awareness that there is in
the community regarding experimental recreational use and by doing that
hopefully then there is a greater level of education."
