CALIFORNIA: TENANTS CAN STAY
Three elderly public-housing tenants whose evictions over a relative's drug
use were upheld last week by the United States Supreme Court will be
allowed to stay in their apartments. Oakland's housing authority director,
Jon Gresley, said the evictions were canceled because the drug problems
that prompted them had been resolved. But he said there would be no
reprieve for a fourth tenant, Herman Walker, who was ordered out in 1998
after three warnings that his caretaker had a crack pipe. That problem has
not been resolved, Mr. Gresley said.
