THOSE MAJOR 'DRUG BUSTS' PUT IMPORTERS ON NOTICE

Never in all my years of military service have I been so upset by someone's
opinion, but Redford Givens' letter to the editor made my blood boil.

Does he suggest that we, as a nation, do nothing about the import of
illegal drugs into our country? In fact, Mr. Givens seems to be suggesting
that we open our borders to the import of illegal drugs in order to drive
the prices down.

It is true, "a few drug busts," as he calls them, will not stop the illegal
drug trade into the United States, but it does put those who import drugs
on notice.

As a proud member of the United States Navy, and a father of four, I
applaud the officers and crew of USS Stephen W. Groves for their actions
during her recent deployment. Because of their drug-interdiction
operations, we are making it harder for illegal drugs to find their way
into our schools and into the hands of our children.
