GREENSBURG SALEM: SCHOOL SWEPT FOR DRUGS
Police from a dozen or more municipalities swept through Greensburg Salem
High School yesterday, searching for illegal drugs with the aid of 13
trained dogs.
Greensburg Police Chief Richard Baric said officers found suspected
marijuana in one school locker and in two vehicles in the parking lot.
Three male students -- two of them 18 and one 17 -- were expected to be
charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Baric said.
The students who were to be arrested will be suspended for 10 days and face
disciplinary hearings before school administrators, said district
Superintendent Tom Yarabinetz. Further penalties will depend on their
history and the type and quantity of drugs seized, he added.
Yarabinetz said the date of the sweep had been set about two weeks ago and
had nothing to do with the trouble at neighboring Hempfield Area High
School. Hempfield Area has been the center of media attention since the
slaying of Adam Bishop on April 19.
"We want to take a very active proactive role in the fight against drugs,"
Yarabinetz said. "We want to send a message to kids that we're not going to
tolerate it."
