OFFICIALS CONSIDER DRUG-TEST CHANGES

Carthage R-9 School District seeking comment from residents, parents,
students on policy revisions From staff reports CARTHAGE, Mo. - Officials
of the Carthage R-9 School District are looking at possible revisions to
the district's drug-testing policy for students in extracurricular activities.

The district is seeking comment from residents, parents and students. A
public forum will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in the auditorium at Carthage
High School.

A meeting in January showed that students do not believe the existing
policy is strong enough to deter students from drug and alcohol use.

A policy that includes random screenings for drugs and alcohol was
recommended. The screenings would be confidential.

Athletes, cheerleaders and dance team members would submit to the testing.
Parental consent would be required.

Repeat offenders would face suspension from extracurricular activities, but
they would not be suspended from school.

The policy review was requested after school board members received
complaints from parents and students about the handling of intoxicated
students at school activities and athletic events.
