FAILED MARIJUANA POLICY
Well, once again we learn that the only way to die from marijuana use
is to be shot by a police officer or an illegal dealer ["Cop Kills
Bellport Man," April 21]. What a tragic tale for both the victim and
the officer. I don't envy the officer's future lack of sleep as he
ponders killing someone while executing a search warrant that
revealed (gasp!) a half pound of marijuana, worth less than $500 on
the street.
And what's with "eight specially trained officers" executing a search
warrant with submachine guns and shields? Large quantities of
marijuana aren't easily disposed of at short notice. If police were
concerned for their safety, why not just surround the house and
knock? Isn't it time we reconsider our failed policies concerning
responsible adult marijuana use?
