KENORA MEN FACE DRUG CHARGES AFTER COCAINE SEIZURE

Two Kenora men face drug-trafficking charges after being arrested Monday
night just west of the Ontario town. Police say they seized almost three
ounces of cocaine.

Drug unit Det. Sgt. John Horne said the latest drug seizure put the street
value of narcotics confiscated at almost $5.2 million since the beginning
of the year. In 2001, the unit seized $6.2 million in drugs in an area from
Kenora east to the Thunder Bay area.

"We've almost equalled what we did all of last year," Horne said. "What
we're seeing are more substantial seizures."

The latest arrest happened at about 10:15 p.m. as officers, acting on a
tip, followed a car on Highway 117 heading into Kenora from Winnipeg.

Horne said before the car came to a stop, police noticed three packages
being tossed out the front passenger window. Officers later retrieved the
items, finding 84 grams of cocaine.

"No one likes to get caught with the stuff," Horne said. A 34-year-old man
and a 29-year-old man are each charged with possession for the purpose of
trafficking.

"We're finding this is not unusual," Horne said. Drug dealers will go to a
larger centre and bring back smaller amounts. If they get caught, it
doesn't have that much impact on business."

Horne said the latest seizure followed one on March 31 in Longlac, Ont., in
which a 43-year-old British Columbia man, after he was stopped for
speeding, was found by police to be in possession of 113 kilograms of
marijuana, 17 kilograms of cocaine and 800 grams of heroin.

The man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Two other men were recently arrested near Marathon, Ont., after the driver
of the car they were in fell asleep, and drove into a ditch. Police found
80 kilograms of marijuana in the car. A Toronto man and Vancouver man were
charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Horne said police believe more and more drugs are being ferried east across
the country, most often from Vancouver, as tighter border security has
reduced the amount of drugs being brought up from the United States.
