TECHNO SCENE IS ON THE RISE UNDERGROUND
Techno music is a style of dance music combining computer-generated,
disco-like rhythms with digital loops and fast regular beats. Techno, or
"Underground," is a broad genre that encompasses many different styles of
electronic music. Originally developed by a small group of African-American
men and boys in Detroit, techno quickly took on an international following
and helped lay the groundwork for the emerging rave scene.
Mac, a DJ from the radio station WILD 97.9, says, "Techno and dance will be
new and upcoming."
Another local area DJ is Daniel Rockwell, and he creates his own music.
Instead of using an instrument like a guitar or a drum, DJs use scratch
pads and vinyl records to create music.
He says that over the years techno music, raves and everything associated
with the Underground music scene has received a lot of negative media
attention. He said the terms have been wrongly associated with drugs and
angry people.
Rockwell says, "You see more cracked-out people at the pub than at one of
these," referring to raves and parties. Even though there are drugs at
raves, the main purpose of the people there is to have a good time and
dance, he said.
Drug use "is throughout the world," Rockwell adds. "Oklahoma as a state is
better off in the world as far as drug use. It's at a minimum here."
Most DJs try to keep their parties clean and drugged-up people out. The
music is played loud, but the beat seems to energize the dancers.
Rockwell is one of many Underground DJs in Oklahoma. He estimates there are
45 to 50 DJs who are active, and many more in Oklahoma that "never get out
of their bedroom," Rockwell said.
Rockwell's advice for DJs starting out is to get your name out. You have to
practice, practice, practice. It's a difficult art to practice. Get to know
people. Learn the history of the music, learn the genre and what you like
to play.
Make demos and hand your music out, Rockwell said. The successful DJ is
well-versed in his subject and knows how to give people a good time. By
