CANNABIS
The recent imprisonment of a local paraplegic man for growing a few
cannabis plants ( ODT, 28.3.02) was harsh and inhumane. The medical
benefits of cannabis have been recorded from ancient times, and today, many
New Zealanders suffering chronic pain and terminal illness are reaching for
the relief of this herbal medicine.
Yet, contrary to common sense and compassion, the use of cannabis as a
medicinal curative and painkiller is still illegal in New Zealand. In
contrast, Canada, America and the UK have allowed the sick access to this
medicine, which many prefer to the standard prescription of pharmaceuticals
and their toxic side-effects. Marijuana is also used by many to overcome
these adverse effects. Isn't it about time New Zealand, which portrays
itself as a forward-looking country, followed suit, instead of locking
medicinal cannabis users in jail?
