GRAND JURY INDICTS DEA AGENT ON MURDER CHARGE

Federal Authorities Have Said The Agent Was In Roanoke Investigating A
Marijuana Conspiracy Case.

An off-duty federal drug enforcement agent was indicted by a grand jury
Monday on murder and firearm charges in the slaying of a Roanoke man
outside a Valley View Boulevard restaurant.

Timothy Glenn Workman, 31, of McAllen, Texas, had previously declined a
preliminary hearing in the Feb. 12 death of 41-year-old Keith Edward
Bailey. The shooting was apparently not related to any Drug Enforcement
Administration investigation, state and federal officials have said.

According to federal authorities, Workman was in Roanoke investigating a
marijuana conspiracy case that originated in South Texas on the night he
and Bailey met. The men, who had been drinking at O'Charley's in the last
hours of Feb. 11, were talking to the same woman in the restaurant parking
lot when they clashed about 2 a.m., authorities said.

According to a search warrant filed in the case, police arrested the
apparently intoxicated Workman after he told an officer that he shot
Bailey. Investigators found red stains consistent with blood on Workman's
pants legs, according to the warrant.

Evidence gathered so far shows that only Workman, who had a 9mm pistol, was
armed, Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell has said.

Workman, through his lawyer, has said he is innocent. The lawyer, Tony
Anderson, has declined to comment further on the case.

Caldwell has said that the shooting resulted from the combination of
alcohol, a gun and testosterone. Caldwell was not available for comment Monday.

Lawyers in the case are preparing for a five-day trial Sept. 19-25. The
trial will begin that Thursday, with a weekend break.

Workman, who was placed on leave with pay, has returned to Texas after
posting $100,000 bail.
