WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

"Disputing The Cops' Account" [April 26] is nothing less than an
attempt by Newsday to incite an incident directed at the Suffolk
County Police. And Newsday may have succeeded, since it is now
reported that a group protested in front of Suffolk's Fifth Precinct
in Patchogue demanding a special independent investigator ["Cops'
Account Disputed Again," April 27]. A special investigator? For what?

No evidence has been produced indicating that a crime was committed by
the officer who fired the fatal shot at Jose Colon, or by anyone else
for that matter, other than the people inside the house that was the
subject of a lawfully executed search warrant. Sowing seeds of
discontent is what Newsday and its editorial staff is all about. Of
course, all of this is to boost sales of the paper.

The reputation of the officer involved and the police department as a
whole are at stake here. Suffolk County has devoted much time, effort
and manpower to foster positive relations in Bellport. Over the course
of a decade, positive results have been made for residents both by the
police department and the community itself.
