WEEKLY LAURELS AND LAMENTS
Combating drug use is far more complicated than simply saying "no." But
"no" can certainly help. Case in point: Dane County Executive Kathleen
Falk's directive to the head of the Alliant Energy Center in Madison not to
book any more so-called raves at the publicly owned coliseum until she
researches whether the county can legally ban such events. Her decision
came after the Journal Sentinel described blatant drug use at an event in
late April. Falk, a Democratic candidate for governor, also has asked the
director of the Alliant Center to review whether additional security
measures might deter drug use. An outright ban, as some Dane County
officials pointed out, may not be legal or effective but, considering the
scope of this serious problem, Falk is wise not to rule anything out.
