EQUALITY UNDER LAW ONE OF GREATEST LIES

TO THE EDITOR:

Tucked away on page 5A of the May 1 edition of The News was an article
titled "Gov. Bush sheds tears over daughter's drug abuse problems,"
datelined Tallahassee, Fla. (Associated Press).

I can appreciate Gov. Bush's anguish over his 24-year-old-daughter's drugs
- -most parents would be distraught.

But this situation illustrates a bone that's been sticking in my throat
since I was a young person -- in spite of all our righteous talk about
every citizen being equal before the law, and therefore to be treated
equally, the facts tell us differently.

We live with many lies, and this is one of the greatest. The law provides,
and the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the law as Constitutional, that
people occupying public housing, can be evicted if their children,
grandchildren, etc. residing with them therein, are caught using drugs. And
some have been evicted under this law.

Now the Florida mansion is public housing, built and paid for by the
taxpayers of that state. So where is the eviction order for the governor
and his family? Has the Supreme Court reversed their previous ruling?

I trust that I have not pre-empted a News editorial nor offended that
royalist in favor of Executive Privilege.
