FATAL SHOOTING BY OFFICER IN DRUG RAID BRINGS PROBE
AQUEBOGUE (AP) - An investigation has begun into whether a state trooper
justifiably killed an alleged drug dealer during a raid at the suspect's
Long Island home, authorities said.
John Rasanen, 28, was fatally shot in the chest Friday morning after
ignoring orders to lie on the floor and charging at a police officer, who
then fired his gun once, said Maj. Walter Heesch of the State Police.
The State Police's Bureau of Criminal Investigation and its Internal
Affairs Bureau have started interviewing witnesses to find out whether the
officer, who remains unidentified, reasonably used deadly force to defend
himself. They will submit their reports to the Suffolk County district
attorney's office, and a grand jury will likely review the case.
