CRUEL ACTION
I read your May 1, 2002 article, "Sheriff Won't Return Marijuana," with
interest. Sheriff Virginia Black should know that she is only sworn to
uphold California law, not federal law, and that the people of California
legalized the use of medical marijuana in 1996.
Here reference to California Health & Safety code 11362.5, or Prop 215 as
she called it, as "an ugly thing" demonstrates how out of touch she is with
the will of the people of California. Depriving sick people of medicine is
nothing short of cruel and immoral.
Violating a judge's order ought to land Sheriff Black in jail like it would
any ordinary citizen. Sheriff Black is not above the law.
And come election time, Yuba County voters should select a candidate who
follows the California State Constitution's mandate to uphold state law.
