BEVY OF INCUMBENTS LOSE PRIMARIES IN EASTERN KENTUCKY

In Eastern Kentucky, at least five judge-executives and one sheriff were
ousted in Tuesday's primary elections.

Judge-executives Darrell Bumgardner of Wolfe County, Hershell Sexton of
Menifee County, Jennifer Jones of Bell County, and Paul Hudson Salyer of
Magoffin County were beaten by primary opponents.

Bumgardner lost to Raymond Hurst, a Wolfe County truck driver; Sexton, a
former Menifee County sheriff, lost to James D. Trimble, a retired drivers'
education teacher; Jones was beaten by 18 votes by J.S. "Bo" Ausmus III, a
former state representative; and Salyer was defeated in the Democrat
primary by Charles Hardin, former judge-executive who lost to Salyer four
years ago.

In Johnson County, Tucker Daniel easily won the Republican primary against
former state Rep. Ray Preston, placing him in position to become the first
county judge since 1918 to succeed himself.

Only one of three former sheriffs convicted of drug-related felonies
completed the first step of political comebacks.

Doug Brandenburg, who served three terms as Lee County judge-executive and
one term as sheriff before pleading guilty to a federal drug charge,
defeated former Beattyville police chief Danny Townsend in the Democratic
primary. He faces incumbent L.C. "Bub" Reese in November.

Former Breathitt County Sheriff Ray Clemons, who was removed from office
after his conviction on drug-related charges, lost by 44 votes. In Morgan
County, former Sheriff Roger Benton, convicted in 1987 of protecting drug
trafficking, finished third in a four-man field of Democrats.
