TALK ABOUT SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE
Substance abuse is a real problem that demands real solutions. That's why it
is particularly disheartening to read that the Office of Drug Control
Policy, led by Drug Czar John Walters has frittered away hundreds of
millions of dollars in propaganda campaigns that haven't worked. And the
waste isn't limited to just this latest $180 million boondoggle. Every year
this country spends $40 billion on a failed War on (some) Drugs yet today
drugs are more prevalent, cheaper and of higher potency than they were 15
years ago. Clearly it's not working.
The drug czar's solution for these failures is to ask Congress for increased
spending so he can do more of what we already know doesn't work. For someone
who worries so much about sending the wrong message to kids, the czar really
needs to work on his own.
