DARE REALLY WORKS; PLEASE DON'T LET IT DIE

I am very upset about the proposed DARE program cuts in our schools. I am
also upset with those in charge claiming that "these are expendable
programs" and so-called experts saying that the DARE program "tactics do
more harm than good."

I am offended that adults think so little of kids and the benefits of drug
prevention. I completed the DARE program earlier this year at my school
(Jefferson Elementary). I learned so much that I will carry with me as I
begin middle school in August. I not only learned how to deal with peer
pressures, but the effects of substances on different body systems. Some of
these substances aren't even classified as drugs, i.e. correction fluid,
spray paint, etc.

While so much negative stuff is written every day about the police, I know
that I have not only a mentor/teacher, but a life-long friend in Officer
Ventura. I think that all my friends in the fifth grade at Jefferson will
agree with me.

We all love and thank Officer Ventura for his time, devotion and love to
keeping kids off drugs and safe. I believe it is a disservice to all kids
to cut the DARE program and I feel bad that my younger brother is going to
be robbed of its benefits.

Parents and fellow DARE graduates, please speak up and let Chief White and
Mayor Holliday know that DARE does work and needs to be continued. Speak
up. Speak now.
