FLAG FAILS TO IGNITE, FELGER ARRESTED
The ceremonial burning of a U.S. flag amounted to little more then a damp
squib as pro-pot protesters failed to light the Stars and Stripes banner
they hoped would illustrate a point outside the Abbotsford Court House
Thursday.
However, it was not Abbotsford Police that persuaded activists to drop
their stunt but Mother Nature - a light breeze ensuring the flag failed to
ignite.
The four protesters, led by local marijuana activists Jon Fulford and Tim
Felger, were speaking out against the U.S. based Drug Enforcement
Administration entering Canada.
Commenting at the preceding protest on South Fraser Way, Fulford reckoned
the shock tactic was the ideal way of getting their message across. "We
plan to burn the American flag upside down. This is just so controversial,
and we love controversy," he said. "This is not against the American
people, it is against the ideas of destroying freedom."
Felger was unavailable for comment at that time-choosing to persue a tow
truck on foot after it pulled his vehicle from a 'no parking' zone. Two
Abbotsford Police cars arrived outside the courthouse as protestors
approached, after officers outside the building had called for assistance.
Felger was soon arrested for causing a disturbance, and Fulford was told he
faced arrest for arson should he burn the flag. However, his attemptes to
produce a flame came to nothing, and many officers petered away from the scene.
After realizing the flag burning was a non-event, Fulford moved onto 'plan
B,' smoking a joint and stomping on the flag. He then repeated the same
move whie standing on a picnic table.
The group's previous protest had seen "Legalize Marijuana" banners facing
South Fraser Way and Fulford arguing their case through a megaphone.
