SUSPECT SHOT, OFFICER HIT BY CAR AFTER DRUG STAKEOUT
BOULDER, Colo.- A 26-year-old Nevada man was shot and wounded and a police
officer suffered minor injuries when he was struck by a fleeing vehicle
after a drug stakeout.
Joshua Allen Penman of Dayton, Nev., was shot once in the chest or shoulder
Saturday afternoon, police spokeswoman Jennifer Bray said.
Officials at Boulder Community Hospital, where Penman was taken, would not
release his condition Sunday. Bray said he was expected to recover.
The 39-year-old officer who was struck by the vehicle was treated and
released. His name was not released.
Penman was shot after the Boulder County Drug Task Force and the federal
Drug Enforcement Agency tried to arrest him and two other suspects in an
alleged marijuana distribution ring as they left a Boulder motel Saturday.
Penman and another man fled in a vehicle that hit the Boulder officer, Bray
said. The officer who was struck and another member of the drug task force
opened fire, wounding Penman.
The vehicle crashed into a guardrail a short distance away. Bray said
Penman was driving the vehicle and was captured as he fled. The other
suspect escaped.
The other officer who fired at the vehicle is a 32-year-old member of the
Louisville police, Bray said. His name was not released. An investigation
of the shooting is under way.
Five other suspects, all from Colorado, were arrested for investigation of
federal drug violations. Authorities were still seeking the second person
in the vehicle and the third person in the motel room.
