METH COOKS PREFER 'NAZI' METHOD
Some say meth's "Nazi dope" nickname stems from the battlefields of World
War II, where Nazi soldiers used the drug to increase stamina.
But Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agent Conner Magee dispels that story,
saying the moniker originates from a more contemporary neo-Nazi American
whose product became synonymous with his beliefs.
In both stories, the cooks used anhydrous ammonia to make meth. This
process accounts for most of the drug made in southwest Mississippi because
of the availability of the chemical. Area lawmen call it "Nazi Dope" to
distinguish it from meth made with red phosphorous, a recipe more prevalent
in the western United States.
Pseudoephedrine is the key ingredient in the Nazi Dope method and is
commonly found in diet pills and sinus medicines, such as Sudafed. The
other precursors act on the over-the counter pill to extract
pseudoephedrine and transform it into a powerful stimulant.
"Most of these cooks cook on the Nazi methodology, cooking an ounce at a
time mostly," said narcotics bureau area director Ronnie Frazier. "So they
don't have a ton of money invested in it, but it's a quick dope, and it's a
good dope.
"It's not a real hard process. ... You could be in a car traveling around
Pike County and have a cook going on, and all you're doing, you're
saturating your pills to where you strain them down to get your ephedrine."
Some meth addicts learn to make the drug from recipes found on the Internet.
Former addict Robert Daniel learned while in a Tennessee rehab clinic. His
teacher was a fellow patient and Mississippi resident.
"I was in rehab with guys who were addicted to the cook, never used the
drug," he said. "It's amazing to see something come from nothing like that
and then people busting your door down to get it."
